Biases and distribution patterns in hard‐bodied microscopic animals (Acari: Halacaridae): Size does not matter, but generalism and sampling effort do

چکیده
Aim The interplay between distribution ranges, species traits and sampling taxonomic biases remains elusive amongst microscopic animals. This ignorance obscures our understanding of the diversity patterns a major component biodiversity. Here, we used marine Halacaridae to explore whether differences provinces can explain their or if differential efforts across regions prevent any macroecological inference. Furthermore, test certain functional influence patterns. Location Europe. Results Whereas geographical variables provided better explanation for in composition, effort distance from biological stations accounted majority European richness. Species occurring more habitats showed broader ranges accumulated records. like generalism affected halacarid species. Main Conclusions We propose that mites Europe might be explained by two different cognitive biases: convenience selecting localities compared others tendency zoologists scrutinise where target organisms are common.

Controlling cell division in yeast and animals: does size matter?
In yeast, cell-size checkpoints coordinate cellular growth with cell-cycle progression. Now, evidence has been provided that such checkpoints probably do not exist in mammalian cells. These findings highlight an important difference between how yeast and animal cells proliferate in response to extracellular cues.

متن کاملGranularity, scale and collectivity: When size does and does not matter
Bridging levels of "granularity" and "scale" are frequently cited as key problems for biomedical informatics. However, detailed accounts of what is meant by these terms are sparse in the literature. We argue for distinguishing two notions: "size range," which deals with physical size, and "collectivity," which deals with aggregations of individuals into collections, which have emergent properti...
متن کاملWhen Size Does Not Matter: Pairing Sites during Meiosis
The alignment of homologous chromosomes that occurs early during prophase of meiosis usually occurs in two stages: a pairing stage where the homologs are roughly aligned and a synapsis stage where homologous chromosomes are aligned precisely and held together by a specialized structure, the synaptonemal complex (SC). Meiosis culminates in the segregation of homologous chromosomes that have been...
